Hi Everyone I'm Nichola from Worcestershire (in the near vicinity to the Malvern Hills). I'm working on becoming a baker after just finishing Uni (studying environmental education and education studies) then realised it wasn't for me, so turned to my favourite past time- baking bread and cooking. I'm involved with a up and coming community project where I've been asked to build a cob oven (something I've always wanted to do) so any pointers and tips would be gratefully received. Also have to do it on a very minimal budget, but we do have copious amounts of wet clay and free sawdust available to us. Thanks, can't wait to have a look around the forum

Hello Nichola......welcome to the forum.
Half the problem for you is building a base. If it's for a community project, try to rope in some volunteers to build either a masonry base (couple of walls and a slab)...or a sturdy wooded frame.
I see you have registered also with the old forum so do as much research as you can and decide if you want an entrance arch or just a hole cut in the face of the clay.
Not sure what you mean when you say "wet clay"...when mixed with sand/straw/sawdust and formed into cobs ......and dropped from shoulder height it shouldn't flatten out.....neither should it stay firm or crumble.....it should keep its shape and give just a little.
I can help you out with fire-bricks for the hearth.......but I'm in Newport?. I could also pup up for the day to assist with the oven build.....?
All the best with your project
Terry

Hi Nichola, welcome to the forum. Good luck with the project. I have family in Malvern, whereabouts will the build be?
