very interesting, it implies that the cement used there for the thermal mass is refractory cement as it starts to set in 20mins.

Interesting to see that the Allan Scott design also has the insulation under the hearth rather than between the bricks and support.
I reckon Rado Hand followed Allan's design principle although I can't see any harm in doing it the other way round (if not better).
