After some research (and major thanks to kerneos for publishing their studies); it would appear that the most suitable mix uses "Chamotte" - which by my understanding is grog or fireclay which has been fired, then re-ground. Any idea who sells this bulk in the UK? (FYI, here's a quick table on aggregte maximum temperature when mixed with HAC/Ciment fondu to make refractory mortar) Aggregate Type Maximum temperature limit Calcareous-Siliceous 450°C Siliceous 500°C Limestone 700°C Perlite,Crushed House brick 1000°C ALAG® 1100°C Crushed Firebrick 1150°C Chamotte (42-46% alumina) 1250°C Sources: www.kerneos.com/IMG/pdf/CF_GB.pdfwww.cimentfondu.com/gb/artisans/PDF/FP_RefractoryMortarConcrete.pdfAlternatively... Where can I get some crushed firebricks?

I bought some grog from The Clay Cellar to do some tests with and ended up using a small amount in my oven. Helpful people. They only list up to 25kg but maybe they will do a bulk price or direct you to where you can buy a large qty. On a side note for others, when I was there they told me they were going to be selling pre-grogged clay specifically for building a WFO. Can't see it on their price list but I would give them a call if you want to build a clay one and don't want the hassle of puddling. www.claycellar.co.uk/pricelist.pdfNick.

Thanks; dropped them a message.
I need to experiment with mixes, but I'm thinking of adding some sand to the mix (differently from cimentfondu's recomendation - they suggest 600kg grog to 400-600kg of HAC). I'm doing this purely to save some cash tbh, so may end up not putting any sand...

Also found a company called "John Winter" - they sell grog for £12.something a 25kg bag (min 36% alumina), which works out reasonably cheap, especially considering they charge £25.50 for delivery of a pallet (up to 1000kg).
If only they also sold HAC... M.
