Hello Strapped....welcome aboard. Not sure what you mean by "now in powdered form"?.....If it's just broken up and dried after taking the rubbish out of it, then put it in a container or black bag and water to keep it moist. Salvaged clay is the preferred method when building a clay oven. Every type of clay already has a sand content. You can use the jam jar and water test to see exactly how pure your clay is, but generally it is mixed with 2 parts sand to every 1 part clay with broken up straw (not hay) mixed in to give the formed Cob balls strength and insulation properties. Vermecrete is vermiculite, cement and water. Once it has been used and mixed it takes on a solid crust form. I'm not sure if salvaged vermecrete can be used again? The bricks from a kiln CAN be used for the hearth as long as they are the heavy type bricks. Under hearth insulation is important in giving your oven hearth the protected heat "mass" needed for maximum performance of your oven. Your best friend before building any type of oven is research. Any tips from forum members are a bonus, but look over the clay oven threads of this forum....also our old forum has a wealth of info... woodovenukforum.forumup.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=14&mforum=woodovenukforum&sid=e3b3e736968ab1730d9b1ab546285d90 (you need to register to see all uploaded photo's and links). I've just started building a website for a project in 2013 but have nearly finished a page on Clay oven building. This may also help you.. www.celticwoodfiredovens.com/buildingaclayoven.html?unique=13473045612213702 All the best with your oven......you will never regret building one of these beauties. Terry
