Hi, I live in Folkestone in Kent and I'm researching bread oven builds.
I'm an avid breadmaker and both myself and my wife are alfresco dining enthusiasts - we have been known to barbecue in December.
We are currently considering the pros and cons of precast ovens vs brick or cob built. We have a smallish courtyard garden with limited space, so the area I have set aside for my project is about 1m square in a corner position adjacent to a fence and a garage wall - so good insulation and a highish chimney is going to be pretty important.
Looks like there's plenty of imformation to be had here!

Hi thommo, welcome, and good luck with whatever you choose to go for .
I was pretty limited on space, and went for a 31" brick pompeii in the end. Make sure when you plan your base you allow for the dome, insulation and render etc. Space gets eaten up quickly....!!
With 1m square you are very tight on space but may be able to do something with a good-sized clay oven for example.
Have a good rummage around the site. I found lots of inspiration here when I was planning my build.
cheers Pete

Hello and welcome from another Kentish person. I am only up in Herne Bay so not too far away.
Have a good luck round and ask away with any questions you may have.

Hello Thommotherbear.........welcome to the forum.
With your limited space a Modular oven seems favorite, but do more research as many of the modular ovens available (especially the cheaper versions) may not be suitable for baking bread. They will of coarse bake bread but a lot of them are designed with open door cooking/baking as their main purpose. Also some are already insulated and others need extra insulation added.
A Vault oven would suit your needs perfect as they are best used in baking batches of bread and are also brilliant for pizza party's and slow roasting etc.
Hope you get some more feedback...
Terry

Thanks for the welcome!
The space I have is actually 1200mm square into the cornerbut I need to have the opening facing into the garden rather than along either the garaage wall or fence. I suppose a modular dome would probably fit best but I think on the whole I'd prefer a vault oven with a large thermal mass so I can maintain temperature for longer. I'll have to try and find a design with a domed or angled rear I suppose.
I'm fairly adept at building stuff and count a few mastercraftsmen as close friends who would be willing to do any tricky bits for me in exchange for beer and pizza, so should have no trouble with the bricklaying or template building, I just need to find a good design :-)

Thom There are loads of Vault oven builds with picture diaries on this AND our old forum woodovenukforum.forumup.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=43&mforum=woodovenukforum .......(you have to register on the old forum in order to see pics and links) The one good picture diary that comes to mind is the Vault oven build by Dave Beasley....... www.gardenoven.com/ If you have a clever bricky you can even catelever the walls with extra shuttering giving you a larger slab for your oven.
