So I went to Jewsons - they couldn't have been more helpful. Ended up buying 5 bags instead of 10 as I couldn't fit any more in my car... 3 bags filled the boot, 2 bags filled the rear bench seat... That said, the guy couldn't find fire clay on his system (all he found was fire cement in tiny tubs); nor could he find fire bricks, HAC or any of the other material I was enquiring about. He did ask if I knew any item numbers though, so I thought I would start posting them here... that said, I can't find a stock code/item number on the receipt. (big image: www.europoli.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/jewsons-vermiculite.jpg ) That said - the price was pretty good: 5x Bags of 'Silvaperl Standard V4 Vermiculite' @ £8.99ea+VAT (£10.79ea) Can't knock that, and I'll be back next weekend to get a bit more... based on my enclosure shape, I'm going to need quite a lot of it! M.

Thought I would add some more information to the thread; called Jewson's "Specialist Brick Center" in Reading today, asking about fire bricks. The specs are: HEPWORTH Firebrick ...................... 225 x 113 x 50mm Y134 I called without stating the forum discount (i.e. a cash customre), and was quoted £2.49 a brick. With the discount, that should bring it down to £1.25 or so - but I can't find technical details of the brick anywhere... the Hepworth site says it's main component is "concrete" but no details as to alumina content. That said, on another pdf I found from Hepworth, there is this line in the marketing spiel (not specific to the Y134 brick) Firebricks are made from low alumina fireclay (32.5% alumina content). Which seems a little on the low side for refractory. I quite like the the 42+ (I noticed a 80GD from kilnlinings... but I can't justify paying so much more just to justify my demand for a faster heat-up time ) Next on my list to get quotes for is fire clay... but my local jewson said they didn't sell fire clay, so it may prove challenging... Spinal Jewsons CAN get hold of fire-clay, but only if they want to go out of their way to help you. In any case their price........along with fire-bricks even with the discound are more expensive than Liam at Kilnlinings. Best of luck on your quest for fire-clay. Please let us know what you find. Did you see the post from Marcus about this company... www.ctmpotterssupplies.co.uk/index.htm Terry

Don't buy them all up - I can't get there until Saturday, and I need at least 6 for myself...

Spinal what part of London are you in? I sourced my fireclay from out into Sussex I think near Tunbridge Wells.
It was a bit of a drive but nice scenery and such.

I'm West (near Uxbridge/Heathrow) - so Tubridge Wells is quite a drive... may make a trip of it if I can't find it any closer... there's a climbing place near there... M.

I found a Price list for Jewsons on the National Farmers Union website. It lists the item numbers which may be more useful... I thought the prices would be standard though... www.nfuonline.com/Membership/Farmer-and-Grower/Member-benefits/Exclusive-member-savings-at-Jewson/Click on related documents at the top for the PDF eg, their firebricks listed... I'm more interested in timber atm... JG111027 HEPWORTH Firebrick ...................... 225 x 113 x 50mm Y134 £512.20 JG111110 HEPWORTH Milner Scored Fireback 400mm ........................... Y124 £88.96 JG111155 HEPWORTH Firebrick ...................... 225 x 113 x 64mm Y135 £508.62

I've just used the WOOP 248 account at my local Jewson in Market Harborough. Paid £11.99 + VAT for the 100l Vermiculite £3.02 +VAT for building sand £7.20 +VAT for 30mx150mm roll of DPC £ 11.07 +VAT for a 1200mm prestressed concrete lintel I don't think the lintel was very cheap especially if that was to fall within the building materials -40%. I'm going to try these guys for my next lot of aggregates and materials: www.dbmdiy.comSome of their prices are extremely competitive - same lintel as mine for example for £7.95 inc VAT. Cheers Stefan

Just off the phone to my local Jewson in Anniesland Glasgow, spoke to Derek who was very friendly and helpful.
Was advised that the Hepworth (product codeJG111155) brick was not in stock but could be ordered in for arrival next week.
Bricks were pricey at £3.82 +vat, I quoted the discount WOOP 248, this then gave a saving of 33% not 50% bringing the brick in at £2.54 + vat.

Just off the phone to my local Jewson in Anniesland Glasgow, spoke to Derek who was gery friendly and helpful. It's a difficult choice for you only needing the fire-bricks for the hearth. Liam (kilnlinings) would always be my first recommend, as his bricks are about £1.30 each? plus vat.....or something like that. He must charge delivery (about £60?) and he has a minimum order of £100.....this works for people building a Pompeii or Vault oven but I don't think it's economically feasible in your situation. As i mentioned in my PM, in my view you only need 2" of fire-brick on top of thermal blocks for your hearth to relate to the same thermal value's as your clay dome....... Excuse my confusion (early senile dementure... ) ...was it yourself I posted the links to fire-brick suppliers in Scotland?......it seems the prices you have quoted seem very high, but if you can't find any cheaper .....and haven't found anything on e-bay etc, then you may have to bite the bullet and pay those prices for the quantity you need. ....thanks for the shout on the Jewsons % discount account with us......I shall be having a word with them (nothing to do with your local branch....the % discount on their PC's come from central accounts....I shall check with them) Terry

Hi Terry,
Firstly thank you for the response.
Yes it was me that you sent the links to, and the other supplier in Glasgow (John Cameron) of the afforementioned 2" firebrick came in cheaper though I can't remember the price, but I will post it as I be buying them tomorrow.

As promised here is the price of the 50mm/2" firebrick from
John Camerons Roofing and Plumbing Supplies 55 MacLellan St Glasgow Tel 0141 427 5353
Scone Firebrick 9"x 4.5" x 2" (230mm x 115mm x 50mm) Part No HEA60004
£1.78 including VAT or £1.49 excluding VAT
I purchased 18 so total cost including VAT £32.18
Before they confirmed the price they asked if I was also buying fireclay, so I think they would have given a discount if I had been.
All the staff were extremely helpful and dealt with all my requests, firstly worked out how many bricks I would require for a circular oven floor with a radius of 22.5" (15 bricks).
Staff were not sure of the Aluminium content so asked the manager, manager said she thought it was about 40%and when I asked if she could confirm this she went and phoned the supplier (central refractories) and confirmed it 40%.
As I have already stated was delighted with the service provided, and also very happy with the price.
Would recomend John Camerons to anyone thinking of building an oven in the Glasgow area.

I 've just used the code and he even managed to find fire clay (powdered) although he did say he would pick it up for me as he lives close to the supplier. Very friendly and helpful.
Declined the firebricks though as they were £2.48, think ill have a trip to kilnlinings for those.
Will post the discounts when i get the receipt

Delivery day, only received discount of 40% on sharp sand and lime.
No discount on thermalite blocks, vermiculite, building sand. None on the fireclay either but i didn't expect that.
I'm not too bothered about the discount though as jewson had everything i needed whereas other merchants didn't so it was a lot easier to order from 1 instead of messing about.
Vermiculite was £14.99 Yellow building sand £3.14 Sharp Sand £2.05 after discount of 39.01% Lime was 9.03 after discount of 39.68% Thermalite blocks were £1.32 Fireclay was £12
Would have been nice to get the discounts on the previous page (extra £40 saving) but never mind, on with the build!!!!
This was all from Leeds North
