Hi,
I have decided to build a 42" cornerish oven and adjacent barbecue, I have just cast the base and about to start on the block work, I will post some pictures when I get some younger generation help!!!
I have just found a load of firebricks at the back of a yard, the owner is willing to sell them but he knows nothing about them apart from they came to him on a pallet as 'firebricks' they are 230 x 115 x 75 and weigh about 2.5kg which I thought seemed a bit light?!
Is there any way of checking what grade/quality these bricks are before I part with my money?
thanks in advance! Daggle

I'm still struggling with posting pictures, problems with Flikr and my iPad but I will persevere! I have decided to go with the fire bricks even though they lack density they are not as light as insulating bricks so I will add a bit of mass with a render coat before insulating. The problem I'm struggling with at the moment is the height of my oven door, I'm planning an arched opening, should the 63% be to the top of the arch or an average over the full width of the oven? Hopefully below is a picture of the general chaos of me 'setting out'!!

Hi Daggle, I've always thought it was 63% at its highest (ie top of arch) since the idea is to trap as much hot air inside as poss while being practical about loading with wood, flailing around with a peel etc... I think it's "63% max" rather than "63% ideally"
Stand by - we could both be on a learning curve...

chas is right take measurements from top of dome and top of arch. the 63% is ideal but 60 or 65 is in range

Hi
Hope this an easy question for some of you knowledge boxes on here!
For making your own home brew mortar is it best to use hydraulic lime or hydrated? (And why??!)
Thanks Alan

Thought I would add a few photos just in case anyone is interested... Will it fit?? 100mm block work inner skin with 100mm stone set outer, unfortunately all laid by a joiner! Albeit a quite happy with himself joiner! Slab cast, thermal blocks laid and firebrick floor down on sand/fireclay mix Just the dome to build now :-)

Gday Damn those pics looked pretty good to me and were the right way up The bricks sound like lite duty 29 per cent silica and will do the job well. Regards dave

I'm pretty sure it's Hydrated lime.....don't know why...I'm still learning!!
Your last pic looks really good. You're well on your way. The most difficult bit at this stage is the dome/inner arch transition. Depending on the placement of your inner arch, sometimes you can't continue in a perfect circle and when abutting the dome rings to the inner arch you may have to go literally a little pear shaped. A lot of members wait before laying the voussiors ..or the arched bricks of the inner arch until the dome ring meets that stage. You can then calculate or guesstimate how much of the back edge of the arched bricks need to be cut to make the dome/arch transition...an easy one.
All the best with your next stages.

Thanks for the replies and interest guys, I'm really enjoying the build now and hopefully by the end of the weekend it will look something like a pizza oven, my better half is now getting excited too, ordering tile samples off eBay !! I plan to take the chains and opening/arch up together so it should be easier to work out the transition (fingers crossed!!) but I must admit I've spent more than a few minutes holding bricks this way and that trying to work out if the arch supports the dome or the dome supports the arch!! All this for a pizza lol :-)

So that the chimney almost finished just a top slab to go on then slate tiles on the shoulders and around the oven, split faced tiles on the back wall, insulation layers and top coat of render ..... Should be ready for the Christmas turkey then lol
