A useable alternative to a firebrick base are the composite blocks from night storage heaters, plenty available on freecycle or eBay. I used these along with 200yr old wire cut red bricks from a neighbours (demolished) chimney, total cost for the brick element of my build was £4.19p

That's a tidy bit of brickwork you've started. Liking the way you've used the bricks lengthwise in the arch. Clever idea pre planning it flat - saves a lot if head scratching on the job. Rick
