Was originally going to build a Pompeii style, but due to slab size restrictions have changed to a vault style. The top slab area is 1200x900 and would have just about squeezed a 21" internal dome. But going for a vault will give me 650x780 hearth area and so more room. Managed to get the base done on Friday and and now just dry laying the bricks to get an idea forming. I have ordered some foamglas for the base and for use in the expansion gap. Will cover with a 50mm blanket and then render over the top, no room for anything else. I'm thinking of cutting the bricks into 3 and then building the dome/top out of them. I'm using the baby bath as my mixing bucket as i have no wheelbarrow and cheaper than hiring a mixer. Some of the blocks are slightly out of line, but the render will cover that. The section to the side will be where a gas BBQ will be fixed into place.

What is done is done, a novel approach but life would be boring indeed if we all built the same oven; do let us know how it goes. FWIW I used heater blocks for my oven floor and they work just fine.

Absolutely nothing, it's just that I've never seen heater blocks used whole for a dome/arch.

Really interested to know how you got on with this build? How's the heating of the oven etc? I've just acquired more storage heater bricks than anticipated (currently approx 40..) and am looking for ways I can use them aside from just the floor!

It's all finished and works great. The temperature is getting to around 800-900c and is still hot enough to bake some bread the next day. Have even cooked bacon the following evening, and this is with out a door to keep the heat in.

Oven looks great, I'm just going to take delivery of 88 heater bricks this weekend. I'm planning a vault style oven using these, I presume this number should cover it. Very relieved to see someone else using these too. For some reason i can see the pics of your build on the 1st post but not the others, would be interested to see how it came together for you. I see the completed pics just not the middle process. Great work
