Hi all, No plans to show as it's all in my head. Basically the pizza oven will be between 30"-36", not sure exactly as it will depend on how big I cut my bricks. The chimney from the pizza oven will feed directly in to the grill/smoker chimney. Most of the build so far has either been free or cheap, so far the blocks and yellow bricks were free off Gumtree and the fire bricks, ceramic blankets and fire clay powder were end of range from Kindlings. Even the Cedar decking boards were second hand. The fire bricks are huge at 12"x6"X3". I could get six bricks @ 4"X3"X3" out of each brick. only DIY skills and old yellow bricks are a pain in the arse to lay, the are all slightly different sizes and some have slight bends. Also added a hidden time capsule, I have no idea if it will last. Neil Latest update 20/09/20

Not sure how close you will end up to the fence, but the heat from the oven won't be an issue so long as it is decently insulated. You will find though, that the last couple of layers will be very difficult to apply if close to the fence, especially as it looks like removing and replacing the palings is not an option.

The pizza oven and grill will be enclosed with thermolite blocks. I'm not sure what you mean by palings. There is about a 2" gap from the fence to allow me to get the fence panels out if they need changing.

Ok, I guess if you end up needing to remove the palings you could fix them back again on your neighbours side so the rails will be on your side. I’ve had some experience building ovens close to a wall or fence and it’s a real pain if you don’t have much space to work between them, especially in a corner.

I think paling is a term not used much in the UK: dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/palingI think we'd say panels... My build is quite close to the fence, after insulation and rendering the gap is about 3" - the rendering doesn't look pretty as extremely hard to render in such a small gap but no-one will ever see! If I need to replace my fence panels I'd have to go into neighbours garden!

To replace the panels I can just unclipped the guttering from the pergola, and stand on the pergola to slide the panels up.

My apologies, seems “fence palings” is an Australian term.

Very nice looking build. How long to get to this point? Thanks. I started the base about 2 years ago but the concentrated on doing the base of the swimming pool and landscaped most of the garden. I suffer from mild depression, so also meant I wasn't in the right mood most days. I also had a bad back so after 10 minutes of working I then rested for 20. On top of that I was also waiting for stuff cheap or free. Free yellow bricks were collected last year. I still have to lay about 40m of slate paving i got for free. I done the decking & pergola last year. The roof seamed to low, so built some brick pillars to raise it about 10". Then added a roof this year. I got a load of free breeze blocks (light blue in pictures) in May, so made the effort of starting the build in April. Only done on odd days due to mood and not much done on each day due to my bad back. I'm very happy so far and determined to start the thermal base and sides this weekend. Neil

Hi Neil, good progress given your stated limitations; just one point though, if you’ve got a bad back already don’t make it worse by placing the oven floor too low because that will cause you to stoop. The cooking surface should be at the elbow height of the main user.
