I put a layer of fire cement on after this photo and then tucked her in for the night, forecast isn't great for tomorrow but hopefully the rain will hold off long enough to get my thermal blanket chicken wire and render on. Does anyone know how you prepare the render from Kiln linings ? do you just mix it with water ? Attachments:

Put thermal blanket on yesterday then did my first hot fire. glad I didn't render first as an incredible amount of steam come off the oven once it got over 350 degrees and kept steaming for the rest of the day. Attachments:

Have been quiet for a while as we've been laying a patio, I've started to shape the oven with home brew mix. I was planning on making the dome more rounded. When I'm happy i will render. Does anyone recomend a render mix ? Attachments:

Just this one, i laid four bricks on their end to create a smoke chamber then keystoned them then cut the hole bigger with an angle grinder and cut a circular shape into the top and filled with fire cement and stood the chimney in the cement. I then bricked it up a bit higher with plenty of home brew. Hope that makes sense ? Attachments:

Lee Your vent looks fine. I create my vent on the entrance arch by forming my arch with full bricks, then (where the vent is going to be) I just lay half bricks against the internal arch, leaving a void of perhaps 3 bricks. I then build another half or full brick arch in front of this which leave's a vent of 4 1/2" by 8/9". The 4 1/2" width can be made wider by trimming the bricks either side of the vent. I will try to post pics of this "tricky" bit on my current build... ukwoodfiredovenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pompeiiovens&action=display&thread=437 ....... Not much help to you guys as this piece of the jigsaw will be posted after the w/e 9/10th June. I am thinking of using K-rend for the waterproof render on this build. Using our Jewson forum discount it will save you a few shillings....not all branches will order it in......if not google "Sheffield insulation" and find your nearest branch.....they sell it to Joe public...... I am thinking I will also forgo the proper stainless steel anchor plate. I think the one to match my flue would be £100 before delivery 0_o...
I was planning to cut small brick or metal nubs and fix these to locate the bottom of the dual wall flue in / over, the make a think brick low enclosing and back fill with either homebrew or vemicrete not sure which would be better yet. The idea of the forced brick at the back for support is nice, might have to see if I have the space for such an idea as that would really secure it.
with the homebrew and small retaining wall how structurally secure is it, as I am not sure if I have the space for as much render round it.

Rendered the oven yesterday, no cracks so far so fingers crossed. painted on a waterproof PVA first and then did a 4:1:1 sand cement lime mix then the mrs sponged it down. Just needs a lick of paint and then its time to get started on the counter Attachments:

That looks like a nice neat bit of rendering. I hope mine turns out nice and smooth like that!
