Bit more progress today but had to stop as ran out of fire clay. More should arrive tomorrow with a bit of luck. Built my entrance arch and am happy with how it looks but am worried that it is a bit high and over the magic 63% oven height/door height ratio. It should have been bang on 63% but I was unable to get it to sit right on the form so has ended up 1.5 inches higher than intended and is now at 69%. Will this cause undue problems with heat escaping or will the issues be minimal? I'd rather take it down and redo it now if it is going to be a major problem. Any thoughts?

Hi there bhuna what is the measurement from your cooking floor to the under side of the arch (opening height)

Hi Lee. Its 15 inches. The oven is actually 43 inches in diameter internally due to my amateur workmanship. Aiming for a 21.5 internal height.

So that's 381 mm ok well ur 40 mm higher than the optimum height for a dome that size 63% of ur 43 inch wide dome would be an opening of. 343mm (13.5) looks to me like ur sides are a little high if it isn't to much trouble I would prob take down and lower but only you can make that choice hope this helps

Thanks Lee. Its been on my mind all day so went out this evening and gave it a good hard shove, it moved from the sides, so down it came. Glad I did it and will just spend a bit more time and make more cuts to get it spot on. I know I would only regret it forever if I didn't sort it now.

Glad to see you went for it I think if you took away away a course that is plum and then started the arch it would work just fine

G'day There's a study done in the 1970s on surviving old 18th centry WFO in the Quebec area. They measured all the ovens and the AVERAGE oven door height to internal oven height was. 63 per cent. Thats some higher some lower. Promise you no one will ever measure yours and we will not tell.... Regards dave

Haha Dave! Cheers. I'd have known and it would have always bugged me that it was not as efficient as it could be...

Uncle- if you are unhappy with the arch then why not bold it up bit by bit as you complete each ring ?

Too late for that now rokdok as I've done the rings up to the top of the arch. The next bit will be the arch and then the ring that goes over the top of that. I will then be on full circle rings.

Cheers Woody. I am making good progress with my dome and will put up some more pics tomorrow. I'm a bit disappointed that it is not has circular as I would like (it seems to have a mind of its own). I'm sure once there is a fire in it the neat won't care much for a slight pear shape....
