Finished my vent and entrance today. Went pretty well and I'm happy with it. Looks a bit big compared with the dome but the dome will increase in size after the insulation and render added. Chimney tomorrow....

G'day Big entrances are good. You got to be able to operate the oven through them, so a skinny little tunnel is no good Regards Dave

Just after a quick bit of advice if anyone can help.... I'm on with sorting my chimney/flue and basically I have an 8 inch 1200mm flue pipe that I did intend to use as my chimney. The more I look at it the more I wonder if I can get away with just building a brick chimney instead. I have created my smoke box and started to build up my chimney and cut some bricks for it to sit in. Do I need to bother with the pipe or can I just keep the bricks going and leave it at that? I'll post a pic of how it is today...

Uncle I can't see any reason why you just can't keep going with the brick chimney as you are- If for some reason you change your mind after then it would be straightforward to slip a 6 inch flue inside as a liner. P

Hi bhuna I'm with Paul on this I've been speaking to a few brick layers in site this week and they said a brick chimney would be fine and like paul said put in a liner if not looks like your cracking on well with it though what size hole did you end up with in the arch?

Thanks chaps. I think I will go with the brick chimney idea, much simpler for me. Hadn't considered a liner so good call! The brick chimney will be a 9inch square rather than an 8 inch circle. Can't imagine it will make a huge difference to the draw.
Lee - the hole in the arch ended up being 6inch x 14 inches.
Thanks for the advice!

Another few steps towards completion. Decided that the chimney, although massive, is in proportion with the oven so will likely keep it as it is. I fit it in place but have not fixed it with anything yet until I have tried a few fires and see how it draws. Also got my base coat of k-rend on yesterday too so just the outer coat to go on and its finished. Still resisting the temptation to put a fire in it as have loads of other bits to do in the garden. Decking today. Anyone know where I can get some cheap split face slate tiles for the front? Need about 4m2. I am thinking of cutting through the lintel above my entrance to the wood store to increase the opening size. I will remove the two blocks above it and the only thing supporting the opening will be the hearth slab which is reinforced concrete. Can anyone forsee any problems if I do this? I am sure the hearth slab can support the weight but don't want any structural issues at this late stage...

Today is the day for the first pizza! I've done 5 curing fires of increasing intensity over the last week and did a large one last night and even cooked a few naan breads which were superb. The oven dome did not clear of soot and I am wondering if either I have not quite got it hot enough or it will take a while to burn off the soot from the previous fires? Pleased with how the fires went, have had no issues with cracking and the insulation appears to be working well. The only time I have felt any heat at the top of the dome is after it was on for 8 hours the other day and even then it was only just warm. Last night with the internal temp over 700degrees it was unchanged! Still need to tidy up the outside but that should all be sorted over the next week and I can finally get on with enjoying the fruits of my labour. I'll post pizza pics later, whether a success or not.....
