Now then Les......I touch my forelocks to you Sir for creating such a wonderful grill station.......or outdoor kitchen. I'm not trying to patronise as I am first a bricklayer, then a builder and now a WFO builder so I truly appreciate the work that has gone into creating your grill station. Love the decking and patio (I've done quite a few in my time) so I know how much work has gone into them to get the finished result looking so good.......tip top.....congratulations!!
Don't worry about any blackening above the entrance arch of your oven.....it just shows an honest hard working WFO......and to me.....looks the bees knees.

Cheers all. The build was significantly improved with all the advice from here. Many thanks. Now trying to come up with an 'interesting' design for the doors under the grill.
Will post up a few more pics when it's all done.

The oven is working beautifully. Unfortunately either my skim coat of fire cement was too thin or i painted too early and over the winter a thin layer has flaked off the dome. Nothing too much to worry about and i'll skim it with a thicker coat and let it dry properly before painting

A wood-fired oven regardless of self built or in kit form (modular oven) is a true working , living oven so we do get a few cracks appear after time. They are mostly cosmetic and never seem to affect the performance of the oven. Your cracks also sound cosmetic.....or superficial. No doubt Vitcas will have a compound for treating these cracks......if not....make another post......

Hi Terry, they are not cracks as such but just thin flakes of the surface coat. Definitely cosmetic and to be honest I could just paint over where it has come off. however I'll probably just skim a thicker coat on so it looks better.

Hi Reburner
Thanks for your informative postings! I have bought a Vitcas Pompeii oven like yourself and have just completed building it and have a couple of questions I would really hope you can help on:
1. Do you know where |I can buy some organic/non-toxic firelighters to start my fire? 2. I have had trouble lighting my fire and getting the oven very HOT....i have built as per guidelines from Vitcas and added an extra insulation sheet as you have done and covered in Vitcas cement...is that enough?
Your help and advise would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Chee

Chee,
I never use firelighters. I put 4 logs in the middle/front of the oven in a square then fill with about 8 sheets of scrunched up newspaper and then pile a few sticks of kindling on top and then a few logs. This method never fails to light. Needless to say everything needs to be dry. After about half an hour I push the fire to the back of the oven a little and spread it out and put a few more logs on. I then leave it for an hour before pushing the whole lot to one side ready to cook.
This method never fails to get me up to around 500C+ but only after about an hour and a half. It really needs that amount of time to get the whole oven up to temperature. At first I thought this was a real pain but now I use the above method and I just light it and leave it.
Hope that helps.

What an inspiring thread. The workstation (and the rest of the garden) looks fantastic especially in the dark with the garden lights on.
