if making a house type structure then I would say you do not need the blanket as there will be more than enough insulation with just the certificate loose back filled over the dome up to the level of the roof. If rendering to an igloo shape then a blanket is well worth the outlay. Do you have a pic you have seen that you plan to emulate?
underneath the same as above you can't have too much, the us guys lay a good few cm, the other option is to get some thin thermalite blocks and use those to make a level and then put your boards on top, quick dry and efficient.

Hi Turkey This is the sort of finish I was looking for - Charlie's Build but it looks like he covered his dome in blanket first before filling with vermiculite. Attachments:

I would also cover a dome/vault with thermal blanket regardless of render finish or a housing. It's supposed to add more massed heat value to your fire-bricks.

I have decided to move the location of my Pompeii for a number of reasons. - This location is just to the right of the previous position so will not obstruct the view
- The slabs here are fully bedded on concrete so I won't need to lay a new foundation.
- I can join to the existing wall to save myself a few blocks.
I have now drawn up some plans, just sketches really. Any thoughts? plus.google.com/photos/106855887720264154869/albums/5861518324394654369?authkey=CMyWpqXU0cX1xQE Thanks Mark

The diagram looks good. If you go to the trouble of building a housing....it's always worth it, and there's no need then to mess about with a vermecrete layer (like I had to today).....simply cover the dome with a thermal blanket and pour loose vermiculite in the void.
Nice workmanship so far on your build.....looking forward to the next stages.

Made a bit more progress over the last 2 weekends. 100mm hearth now in and a 25mm vermiculite insulation layer. Hearth went in well but found the vermiculite a pain to get level or smooth. I'll put a measure on it tomorrow to see how successful or otherwise I have been! :-) Next is the 50mm insulation board and then I can start on the bricks. Anxious about that! Going to build myself a jig this week and practice a lot I think.

Really nice workmanship. Quite a bit different to my typical Pompeii builds....It looks like you are using the same technique as a lot of the American builds with hollow concrete blocks, vermecrete under hearth insulation....and using a jig to lay your dome bricks.....
I always admire anybody who has the patience, time and skill to rig up a jig and lay the dome bricks individually (as apposed to using a form and lay a ring at a time).....plus the dome/arch transition looks easier to calculate when using a jig.
Love your pics so far and I'm looking forward to seeing your next stages. I'm always looking to improve my knowledge of Pompeii building......and hope to pick up some tips from your build. As I say.....I'm still learning.

is it wrong to have suddenly thought, would you look at the bricks on that!! ? very tidy work and cutting there, the transition bricks are very well done I see, cannot wait to see this go up as we are in for a treat I think.

Thanks for you comments! I am still very much learning and experimenting as I go. I am going for the arch at the front next before I start the chains so that will be my next test. Building the former this week ready for the long weekend - I hope the weather is good!
