That's looking great. I can only hope my build goes as well once I actually start it.

Marudge That's a work of art. I do like the central jig for a precise curve (I've only used a form myself)....it makes for really neat work.(a jig) The deeper you steal space from your hearth and wider the arch entrance is, the easier it is to make the dome transition work with your perfect curve. You may have to... (and many of us do)... slightly go "pear shape" to make your dome rings meet the arch. Some members cut the dome ring bricks to but against the full arch bricks. I try to cut the back of the arch bricks to meet the dome bricks. My builds are a bit rough and ready but here's me trying to calculate the cuts of the arch bricks... This is the first full course above the arch/dome transition... It went a bit oval, but it soon comes back to a neat circle. I am only showing these pics as....sometimes you have to go slightly out of perfect to make this dome/arch transition work for you.....every build is different. Love your build. Terry

Thanks Terry, very useful photos. I have been wondering about that transition and have noticed the circle already going out slightly. Good to see you can bring it back in again later. I am learning that you cannot get everything perfect and actually it is alot more forgiving than you might imagine.
I have been using a piece of string with a knot in it as my guide up until now but my neighbour put together that jig yesterday to keep me on track. Should prove useful for the chains that follow.

Hi. Not posted for a while - apologies. Making slow and steady progress. Been able to take advantage of the good weather and now up to 11th chain. Really starting to look like a dome now! :-) Hopefully will close the dome next weekend so start on arch and chimney.

Thanks for the feedback - that's really encouraging! I have learnt a lot working my way through this and will post a 'lessons learnt' at the end.
I have a question on chimney size.
The FB instructions suggest an 8" internal diameter for a 42" oven. Do you agree? I know length is also dependent on local conditions. I was thinking somewhere around 1.5M. Does that sound about right? I intend using double-walled stainless steel sat on a short brick stack.
Thanks
Mark

Absolutely beautiful!! It's such a shame that you have to cover such workmanship up!!

superb build - are you still going for an enclosure? I'm hoping to go with an enclosure as well so will look forward to seeing your plans.
cheers Sel

Mark, i'd say 8" Internal will work fine. I had 8" single wall on my 36" and the fire would draw really well. I've now gone for 8" OD 6" Internal twin wall flue, but your oven will be able to handle the size of 10" OD flue due to its overall larger footprint. Height of flue, like you said it probably a bit set by external conditions and also aesthetics. Taller is better, but then you run into stability problems too. I'm sure that you'll end up just right for you!
