John
The bagged fire-clay powder is usually mixed with cement. hydrated lime and sand at a ratio of 1:1:1:4.....This is the "homebrew" mortar mix which has been borrowed from the guys over on the FB forum......it works.
I use this mix but many other have got by and made good ovens with similar......or totally different mixes. I would always try to use hydrated lime in the mix regardless of other materials.
Terry
p.s Hydrated lime can burn the skin.....always use rubber type gloves when handling.

pitty not sure if my free bags are pre mixed or just plain fire clay.
take it one 25kg bag be enough as be stretched out when mixed 1:1:1:4

I only used a single 25kg bag for my 32" ish oven.
if the premix bag looks very much like fireclay its probably just firclay. Get a little wet and see if it turns into malleable clay and how it sets. The mortar mix is pretty flexible really, the dome should be self supporting, the mix is to give grab and hold the bricks whilst you get it to a self supporting shape.
I suspect it would be clear if the mix was anything more than clay once you start to add water and test it, cement cures and you would not be able to crumble the resulting dry ball.

ok,
so if fireclay - once wet it will be sft and when dries can crumble it apart
if premix - then once dires it will go solid like normal cement woudl go?
might try later. i have to take car down to mates shed and try replace the blown shocks from bricks in the back

I think so, not knowing what the premix will end up as, but if its anything more than clay it should cure to something quite tough/hard, clay will be quite weak by comparison as it will not "set" until fired.. its worth a shot so you can possibly use the 4 bags of this stuff you have.
good luck with the shocks, dont rush anything if using spring compressors, safety first etc.

got base cut and ready.
ok so i did a test with my free premix.
It went solid but can break it apart if try hard enough. but goes like a real weak cement mix
so is that jus pure fire clay or could it be a premix with cement

Gotta say I really like the layout of the BBQ with the oven beside it. My only real problem living on the NW coast of Donegal is that the weathehr is so bad, so much of the time we would only be able to use something like this for a few weeks a year. The wind and rain would make it impossible the rest of the time. Litterally the coal bunker (part full) blew accross the car park last year.
Best of luck finishing te build, I look forward to seeing photos of the completed oven , it's already looking fab.
