I love the sleeper idea!! I never did tart the base of mine up but run paving slabs all around the top of the base to make a big shelf, for stuff, drinks and elbows !

had oven fired up, load more 1mm cracks opene dup but no smoke out 4hours fire going and then all soot just dissapeared. 4 pizza went through, left each one in bit longer as wife and her friend like them crispy dough did not rise after had made it and left it prrof so think that affected it a bit think about 2-3mins took cook no propper brush or rake so coulnt get all way into back to brush coals back, hence only 1 pizza a time not 2 Attachments:

John
Your oven will get better each time you fire it. It may take 4 or 5 full firings to drive every last bit of moisture out. If the cracks are only small now, they're probably OK. If you have 1 area that is still bad then use some lime or refractory mortar and apply a strip of ex-met or chicken wire to that area......for piece of mind.
Once my initial fire has saturated the hearth and dome....I push the whole lot further to the left and put a piece of "grating" in front of the embers...this helps to keep the embers in one neat spot and it's easier for tossing the occasional log on. I also don't have a brush. I use a piece of copper pipe, flattened on one end and gently blow the ash toward the ember pile.

some the old cacks did come through my repairs but more like hairlines
the others are not massive but there was no moisture comming from them so may be just cracking from bricks expanding and cracking outer mortar skim
must get around to insulating it and making it weather tight
i tried the pipe idea but last time happened i got fright when cat jumped on from oven on to me and ended up sucking loadk soot and ask back up hahaha
but real nice to watch it cook and burn away for 1st time
my concern with grating was when need re heat floor have try find place to put hot grating but suppose easy throw it to one side of the oven inside
