my main concern is mainly spalling of the mortar during heating as the 2 bad areas are up high over the cooking area.
also there looks to be 2 bricks that have moved inwards and created a ledge that soot may gather on.
also over arch there is few areas i am worried soot may gather and fall onto food
may point...should waited for weekend and finished last 1-2 hours in dry weather and gotted better finish on it. honestly looked better outside then inside when done it didnt realise would look as bad or be as rough

John The dome itself looks A OK. The top of the dome does look like you have rushed this final piece of the jig-saw. Many of us tend to try to enclose the dome as quick as possible......I am the biggest offender of this. On "Robs build" I used allsorts to finish off the dome....and doesn't look a pretty sight.... ....but it works....and works well. I have great faith in the homebrew mortar of 4:1:1:1....sand, cement, hydrated lime and powdered fire-clay. This stuff is as strong as the fire-brick itself. Not sure on the mortar you used.....and it's down to you if you think you should re-lay the top 3 courses of your dome. As long as the brick that dropped isn't loose...the top of your dome really can't go anywhere. At the end of the day it has to be your decision. If you have any large gaps around the arch....I would get some 4" ex-met...or chicken wire and scrunch it up and pack inside the gap. Then fill the gap with mortar. If you have powdered fire clay..add that to the mortar, but make sure you put some lime in whatever mix you make.....it will help with the extreme heat which you will get around this area. Terry

mix was as you said, 4:1:1:1 but maybe not very accurate as just used trovel fulls of each
it is solid and to be honest bar cosmetica i would only re do it if i have issues with soot building up and bits sand failly down onto food.
to be honest if was dry and/or waited till weekend i had great idead to get the final rows in perfect and cut each to suit.
but when weather turned and had few personnal items to sort (we are 2 weeks pregnat after 2nd go on IVF) i just wanted it finished and covered.
gaps are inside and prob i har around arch was they are so hard to fill as falls back out on top of your face and burns crap outa you

also, if i do decide re lay top few bricks how long till its too late take them off? my issue is dont want damaged rest of dome by taking the bad ones out.
everything seems solid, took forms out and nothing fell or moed from what can see

"gaps are inside and prob i har around arch was they are so hard to fill as falls back out on top of your face and burns crap outa you" LOL.....I know what you mean.
Your inside looks smooth so even if there are ledges ....as long as you've smoothed them off, then after your curing fires and a couple of full firings...any soot should fall off when the dome goes over 300c
....you still need to fill any voids though.

yes i must get time try point all the tiny voids in lower bricks and smooth out as many bricks as i can over arch.
just by time got up had only hour or so to get in to do it.
will prob point them all sat and try clean around the arch and smooth everything out and get it as ledge free as i can.

there are good few small "V'S" on lower chains with gaps in them as even the tip trowel wouldnt fit in so do these need be ointed?
i will try again at weekend to get in and do final pointing and tidying up inside just no time for next few days
the inner top dome i take it is more visual than structural so hard justify removing it to make it pretty when wont be seen and run risk loosening the lower chains in process of removal

was doing the "cannfradock shuffel" today inside oven trying point it while pissed rain. got good bit feathered in and most gaps filled in. i had tried to build it with as few joints possible so 1st few chain the bricks lay flat on lower chain with no mortar between them. so there are few small joins where tried and failed get any mortar in as they are only 1mm width pics make look bit rough funny looks lot better in real life. the arch is not very neat so tried smooth it all out and remove gaps and areas for soot to lodge. did find i key stock brick that looked have gotten pushed in so might have see if can get in with 4inch grinder and chop end off as there is about a 1inch long section jutting in. mortar was used to try smooth over any ledges or ridges to keep it all as smooth as possible inside it. visually not best and annoyed didnt try the indespensible tool idea seen before as using forms meant cant see any mistakes internally. but as long as it stays up and no sand starts fall out of the mortar onto the food i will be happy Attachments:
