So ready to build my oven based on Davenotts and moonheads builds/advice and many others.
About to hit the order button over the weekend.
Will be taking it easier on this build as I am older and a tiny bit wiser than when I built my clay oven.
So far arranged
Builders will be on site in a month doing some other work, so they will do the slab and base for the oven. Vault arches will be bought precut from kilnlinnings Builders should still be on site when oven is built, so they are going to do a brick skin and roof on it for me.
I have been reading the great book "From the Wood Fired Oven" so will be using foamglass insulation on the base and around the oven. Also seen on Davenotts build with great success.
Was looking at building in insulation between the vault and the chimney, to stop thermal bridging. But now think I am over thinking it when I see the temperatures that Davenotts and other ovens can hold without it.
I would like to thank everyone for all the fantastic information on this forum that makes this next project feel possible.

I bought my firebricks and cement from Kilnlinings. Don't forget the discount code that is on this site. Delivery is expensive, so you want to make sure you aren't short of bricks, so I ordered a few spare of each size. I ordered 3 bags of the 25kg dry cement [KLDASC] but surprisingly only used 1 bag, because of the tight joints, so perhaps 2 bags just to make sure. The cement comes in paper bags, so make sure you store it in a dry place straight away. The delivery comes on a pallet. I bought 2 clay chimney pipes from them, but these developed vertical hairline cracks after a few firings [internal/external temp difference I would guess] mine are encased in brick chimney so not a major problem, but perhaps a stainless steel flue would be better. I would make my chimney entrance bigger next time. I think being able to close the chimney off is really useful for retaining heat after live fire gone, and also for regulating the retained heat [read my 'cooking a pig' thread]

I had a quick look at the kiln linings discount too but as I read it, it's only for orders over £750...is that right?

Looks like they changed it 2 weeks ago, and you now have to spend £750+, whereas before there wasn't a limit.

Thanks davenott. Have placed the order today. Managed to get get the 10%.
Ordered lots of spare bricks, in case i change my mind how the chimney will go. But also liked the idea of being able to use them to make a false wall for smaller firings/adding more thermal mass.
Also going for the large chimney as you suggested.
Thanks

I would advise getting some thin bricks, 25 mm. For the arch. You will find it alot easier with thinner ones.

Order arrived today, we chose a specific delivery date and Liam was very helpful.
As others suggested I ordered extras, probably enough to make two ovens. So should have some spare after the build for anyone else who wants some locally..
That and the huge pile of foam glass I seem to have is taking up all my storage. Better get building soon.

I have a question about chimney building, which I could do with some help on.
Will be building the lower part of the chimney with fire bricks. But as it reaches the roof height would like to change to normal red bricks.
Can i just building them on top of the fire bricks?
Or do i need to build a firebrick chimney, insulate around it and build a brick chimney around that?
I want it to look good and last
Any help would be apppreciated

Hi Adam- yes I swapped to normal brick after raising the chimney level with the top of the vault. Had no problems. Switched from the fire cement to std Portland mix adding 1 part lime to the mix.
When forming the oven entrance you want to create a shoulder to fit a door against. I overlooked that on my build and don't get a good seal when baking or slow cooking.

Thanks for that help with the chimney. Nearly did not have a shoulder. That is a very good idea which has to added.

Hi there I'm taking it you purchased a pre cut arch kit ? If so with them sizes as the height is not half the width the easiest way to make a form is to dry lay your arch on the material you are using get it to the right size use some form of packer to keep the joints the same and just draw round it easy! Perfect template

Perfect template Thanks for the reply. I saw on someone else posted the arches are made up of 17 54mm and 4 64mm and 2 normal bricks Tried laying them out as I saw on the post normal brick, 64,54,54, 64, 54, 54, etc until 64, 54,54, 64, normal on the other side, but laying these out dry did not give me the arch i was expected. Also I seem to only have 64mm and 58mm which may not help. So not sure if I am just laying them out wrong or I have the wrong sizes

I would try with all the large sizes first then the smaller sizes of that doesn't work give Liam at kiln linings an email I'm sure he will help you
